Snippet of the Month: “I know the plans I have for you”

NewsSnippetJan15Its common place now to frequently hear phrases like ‘Believe in yourself’ and ‘you can do anything that you set your mind to’. There’s so much inspirational advice out there with access to the internet and we can find loads of helpful advice and encouragement should we need to refer to it. There are people who offer Life Coaching services who can show us how to be successful, how to identify and achieve personal goals, how to improve our self-confidence and build better relationships both in our personal and work related lives. There seem to be more opportunities than ever for us in terms of our work and so much choice for us in every aspect of our ever busier lives.

At this time of year in particular, many of us try to focus on certain aspects of our lives that we would like to change by setting ourselves goals for the coming year by means of New Year Resolutions. We don’t always get very far with these but nevertheless it gives us something to aim for!

Our God is a God of order and not chaos and therefore would expect us to have a plan in our lives so that we can be good stewards of what he has given us. God demonstrates this through the letter sent by Jeremiah to those exiled in Babylon which is found in Jeremiah 29:

‘This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says …“Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”’

As Christians, we need to make sure that we’re not just relying on our own devices but that we are seeking what his will is for our lives. Jeremiah goes on to say in verse 11:

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

So, as we go forward into another year, remember to seek out Gods will and guidance:

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD.
